Lil Durk Cleared of Federal Murder-for-Hire Charges Following Three-Week Trial

Grammy Award-winning rapper Lil Durk has been acquitted of all federal charges in a closely watched murder-for-hire trial, bringing a dramatic conclusion to a case that has attracted widespread attention across the music industry and beyond.

The Chicago-born artist, whose legal name is Durk Devontay Banks, was found not guilty after a three-week trial in Los Angeles. Following three days of jury deliberations, the panel rejected prosecutors’ allegations that Banks orchestrated a retaliatory plot targeting fellow rapper Quando Rondo, whose cousin, Saviay’a Robinson, was fatally shot during a 2022 ambush at a Los Angeles petrol station.

Defence Challenges Witness Credibility

Federal prosecutors argued that the alleged plot was motivated by the 2020 death of rapper King Von, a close associate of Lil Durk and member of his Only The Family (OTF) collective. Their case relied heavily on testimony from three cooperating witnesses who had entered plea agreements in exchange for their evidence.

However, the defence successfully questioned the credibility of those witnesses, describing them as admitted criminals with strong incentives to implicate Banks in order to reduce their own potential sentences. Lead defence counsel Drew Findling described the verdict as a decisive victory against the government’s case, while Banks became visibly emotional as the not-guilty verdicts were delivered.

Separate Federal Charges Still Pending

Although acquitted of the murder-for-hire allegations, Banks remains in federal custody. He is scheduled to stand trial on 5 October in a separate case involving racketeering-related murder and firearms charges, which were severed from the original proceedings. Prosecutors have confirmed they intend to continue pursuing those allegations.

Two co-defendants, Deandre “OTF Dede” Wilson and David “Browneyez” Lindsey, were convicted on stalking-related offences but were acquitted of the more serious murder-for-hire charges.
