The Prevalence and Characteristics of Bot Traffic in 2024–2025

This report examines the growing influence of automated systems—commonly referred to as bots—on global internet traffic during the period spanning 2024 to 2025. It provides an overview of the proportion of traffic generated by bots compared with human users, categorises the principal types of bot activity, and highlights the significant role played by search engines and artificial intelligence crawlers, with particular attention given to Google’s web-indexing operations.

Overview of Internet Traffic Composition

Recent analyses indicate that bots now represent the majority share of internet traffic. As of 2024–2025, automated systems account for approximately 51 per cent of all web activity. In contrast, human-derived traffic has fallen to around 49 per cent, marking the first time in a decade that human interaction online has been surpassed by non-human activity. This shift underscores the increasing dependence on automated processes within the digital ecosystem.

Classification of Bot Activity

Bot traffic broadly falls into two categories—“good” and “bad”—each defined by the intent and nature of the automated behaviour.

Bad Bots

Malicious or unauthorised bots constitute a substantial proportion of overall traffic. Representing roughly 37 per cent, these bots are commonly deployed to perform harmful actions such as large-scale web scraping, digital advertising fraud, illicit account access attempts, and distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks. Their prevalence presents ongoing challenges for cybersecurity and digital integrity.

Good Bots

Beneficial bots make up approximately 14 per cent of web traffic and fulfil essential functions that support the operation, efficiency, and discoverability of online content. These include search engine indexers, performance monitoring tools, and automated systems used to optimise site accessibility and reliability.

Google’s Role in Good Bot Traffic

Among legitimate automated systems, Googlebot, Google’s principal search indexing crawler, stands out as one of the most prominent contributors. Its activity has risen significantly, with data indicating a 96 per cent increase in request volume between May 2024 and May 2025.

On individual websites, Googlebot represents a considerable share of total bot activity—approximately 7.57 per cent in one notable network study. However, it is increasingly joined by crawlers developed by other artificial intelligence companies. Tools such as OpenAI’s GPTBot and Anthropic’s ClaudeBot are expanding their presence rapidly, contributing to broader industry demand for large quantities of training data.

Drivers of Rising Bot Activity

The principal force behind the surge in bot-generated traffic is the escalating requirement for extensive, high-quality datasets to support advanced AI models. As machine learning systems grow more sophisticated, the volume of data needed for training and refinement continues to increase. Consequently, AI-oriented crawlers are becoming more active, intensifying the proportion of automated traffic across the internet.
